No matter how tempting it may be and cost effective.. box colours and home bleaching usually goes wrong and damages your hair,

My main reasons you should avoid home colouring...

  1. Unpredictable Results...

Usually will never look like the colour on the box and most box users don't have the hairdressing knowledge when picking the correct undertone, colour wheel or percentage of developer. With the lack of knowledge a lot can go wrong and will leave you feeling disappointed and creating a colour correction. Box colours can also damage your hair and be hard to correct.. it is cheap for a reason.

2. One Size Does Not Fit All!

Box colour is formulated so everyone can use it but not everyones hair type, condition or colour is the same. most box colours are formulated with maximum amount of pigment and ammonia so its able to work on most people. The ingredients within the box causes havoc on hair health and increases the likelihood of allergies.

(ammonia free box colour doesn't mean healthier)

3. Contains Nasty Ingredients!

Box colours are cheap and contain harsh ingredients that is more likely to damage you hair.

Most box colours contain something called metallic salts which has been known to have a reaction with lightener and cause the hair to disintegrate.

Box bleaches also contain the strongest developer that us professionals don't usually use. Which will take extremely fast and by the time you finish applying would have already developed on where you started. Most of the time will cause breakage and uneven colour.

4. End Up More Expensive

Home colouring will be cheap at the time but will end up more cost effective when you fix it professionally. Colour corrections are expensive and you may have to compromise with what results you can have. Box colours are sometimes hard to shift and sometimes a process to reach to your goal.

5. Ombre/Balayage/highlights in a box

When lightening or colouring your hair at home there is absolutely no dimension in your hair.

Hairdressers go to further training to specialise in techniques like balayage etc.

There is no way you will end up with it looking like a professional balayage or any other technique.

It takes year to perfect on techniques like this so don't be fooled by the advertisement.

5. Vibrant/Pastel In One Application?

This is usually because it contains a strong amount of bleach in the most to be able to lift it as well as colouring it in one go! And that's not good for your hair...

Likelihood of pastels or vibrants is you need to pre lighten sometimes multiple times to achieve the colour you want so most of the time the results from this is disappointing.
